Destilando Morado y Verde
Destilando Morado y Verde is an artistic and political performance that stands against the 59-40 initiative, which supposedly protects children and adolescents against gender identity disorders, and the 9-2022 law, which declared Guatemala the pro-life capital of Latin America. These actions demonstrate that the government has no interest in the current situation of girls, young women, and women in Guatemala.
The numbers are alarming. From January to December 2021, there were 72,077 registered births, of which 70,036 were pregnancies in adolescents aged 15 to 19, and 2,041 were pregnancies in girls aged 10 to 14. These young girls are forced to bear pregnancies and abandon their life plans. Laws that dictate how a family can only lead to segregation and rejection of the diversity and multiculturalism of our country. They seek to perpetuate a traditionalist and patriarchal system on everyone.
The proposal involves embodying movement in “Distilling Purple and Green” as a protest against the laws that violate and perpetuate the subjugation of girls, young women, and women in Guatemala, criminalizing them simply for being born female and diverse.
Today, as Guatemalan women artists, Colectiva Las Niñas de Guatemala takes a stand and does not tolerate or accept initiative 59-40 or law 9-2022. It declares its resistance and commitment to fighting until rights are fulfilled, body autonomy is respected, and the encouragement and perpetuation of violence against life are eradicated.
